Good Neighbor Gardens is excited to present our latest project, Healthy Hubs!
GNG creates "healthy hubs" in each neighborhood by linking all home based gardens with their nearest school garden satellite. The harvest is brought to the school where GNG teaches the children how to farm, consolidate and distribute the CSA shares to the subscribers. The goal is to successfully transfer the vocation of farming, the commitment to healthy eating and the community service ethic to the next generation. Parent, staff and neighborhood volunteers are encouraged to participate in the effort for more bonded community.
We need your help:
Our first school garden satellite is Roosevelt Middle School in Hillcrest - right in the heart of the city at the edge of Balboa Park. RMS received a generous grant to erect a greenhouse and expansive garden but not to cover ongoing supplies and maintenance. Although GNG is a for-profit entity, we have yet to generate enough CSA subscription revenue to adequately staff the school site gardens and cover the cost of their supplies. We are just 1 year young. However, we have been able to identify a fund to receive tax-deductible donations that can be earmarked specifically for garden maintenance and materials.
